August 12 Pastoral Prayer

I picked up on how Karl’s sermon began, when he said that “we begin with endings.” I caught onto that image and expanded on it a little bit for the prayer. Here it is as always, as I scribbled it on the back of my bulletin.

As we pray let us begin with an ending
A God who died
A God who became the servant of all
A God who washed feet
A homeless God
A God who suffered and did not strike back
A God who chose us before we could choose
A God who loves and holds nothing back

Let us begin with an ending
An end to our skittishness and fear
An end to our slavery to the powers of this world
An end to our privilege
An end to our violence
An end to the lives that we know
Which is also a beginning of the life God intends
